My father, as a young man, escaped his miserable life in the 30's in movie theaters. He so loved Nancy Carroll that when I was born in 1940, he named me Nancy Carroll Justice. My mother strongly resented him naming me after a movie star, but by the time she recovered from a difficult child birth experience, it was too late all birth records had been filed, and it was written in the family Bible.
Not to be one upped by my father, my mother changed the spelling of Carroll, every chance she had over the years. When I was old enough (10 years old) to question the many different spelling my mother evaded my query. However my favorite aunt told me the story of my birth, and origin of my name. My aunt swore me to never mention to my mom that I knew the secret of my name. Bursting at the seams to know more, one evening while sitting in our swing with my dad, I asked him about Nancy Carroll. I will never forget the warmth in eyes, soft voice, and loving smile on his face as he spoke of his "dream girl" whose sweet voice, dancing, and eyes got him through some very hard times.
