Donald Grant about Duff, Howard

I met Howard as a co-actor in an independent horror-spoof titled 'Monster In The Closet' (filmed in 1983, released 1986). Through a number of of missteps, the film became the property of Troma Films. It opened in just a few theaters, and immediately went to video through Lorimar distribution.
Howard and I both shared a passion for tennis - and the fellowship over cocktails and good food that follow a few sets of doubles. We would play twice a week at Roger Converse's estate in Holmby Hills. Howard's wonderful wife Judy was a big part of the matches, and we would generally invite a different 4th player each game.
I didn't come from an entertainment family, so Howard became a surrogate father (of sorts). He was a tremendous source of guidance for me as I navigated the industry for the decade or so that acting was my primary occupation.
At first, I was a bit intimidated by Howard. His background and experience was scary enough for an actor who was young to the business. His deep voice, commanding presence and confidence added to that perception. However... once I got to know him and Judy, they immediately opened their home and lives with down-home inclusion.
I was fortunate to play tennis and socialize with Howard and Judy until a few weeks before he died.
He was a wonderful mentor, friend and man.
